PVC pirogue build

Postby jdbuckshot » Thu Feb 09, 2017 1:08 pm

This follow's Herb's 17lb pirogue plans.

only i have used PVC lumber and FPR panel for the sides.

construction has started and i will post later.

Pro's of the PVC is easily glued joints, cuts easier than wood, glues very strongly to FRP (when properly prepped), very flexible, and really light weight.

cons - may become brittle in the bitter cold, not as strong as wood, could have expanding / contracting issues.

Interesting ideas.
I toyed with the use of FRP panels but thought they were too flexible to use as a sub for planks or plywood. I did not consider them for skin on frame design.
Question, If the PVC lumber is "very flexible" will it be strong enough to use as framing? It may be. I don't know. I'm just asking. I have not built "Herb's pirogue" but would think most of the boats strength comes from the frame.
