Non Gator Boats

Postby beekeeper » Tue Apr 05, 2011 1:45 am

My first boat build was a Croc. I have since built these. I consider them desendents of the Croc. They were built without plans, using the things I learned from that first build, and a lot of information from friends and this forum. Hope no one objects.

I agree, awesome boats! I too especially like the cedar strip canoe.

Been meaning to ask, and this is a serious question, do you keep bees?

Thanks guys for the compliments. :) I do not keep bees. My dad did and I helped him until I had an alergic reaction to the stings. The name came because I have a Bumble Bee bass boat. I was always cleaning, maintaining, or doing something with it. Seemed I was the "keeper of the bee", hence beekeeper.
The last boat is actually still not complete. I used 3/8" strips in the floor, so I thought I would not need glass on the inside. Wrong! :x It may meet the definition of a canoe, but I belive it is a soft chined pirogue, or at least that is what I thought I was building. It has a flat bottom and flaired (30 degrees) straight sides.

This is probably my favorite and I have never even paddled it. :D

Beekeeper,

I like them all, I especially like the last one. The flat back you gave your grandson is awesome. It is very apparent that he is enjoying it. You are making some great memories with him paddling - exploring and fishing. Thanks for sharing.

I finally finished my strip pirogue. :D It was fun, but with all my mistakes  , I thought I would never finish. What it is, is what it is:

Thanks Dennis and Brad for the kind words and for letting me post here.
I also like the looks of the strips, but I realy enjoyed working with the solid strips vs plywood. The wood working part of the process is not hard. With planing most small boats could be built with strips.
Somebody said ugly wood finished natural looks better than painted wood. I don't know about that, but the six coats of gloss varnish may be a tad too shiny for your duck boats, right?
